Our Results
On May 31st, 2008 over 180 people gathered at William B Pond Park in honor and support of Brooke DeMar and Ian Diedrich. Those 180+ people helped kick off a memorable event for our families: The First Annual Brooke & Ian's Run for the Families. We started the morning at 5am - Brooke slept in the back of the equinox while we unpacked a Uhaul and started our adventure. Great Harvest Bread came out to offer up warm breads as we gathered steam. Pete's Coffee supported our event with fresh brewed STRONG coffee, which we all needed! The Welters, Diedrichs, Eatons, and DeMars all came together to pull this off!! The crowds began trickling in and before we knew it, the race started...we counted down, took off, lost some tires on the rocky course, and enjoyed every minute of it. The crowd was enormously energizing and brought us to tears more than once over the course of things. Lunch from Back 40 BBQ came soon there after. We enjoyed a great meal and headed into music, fun, and a great silent auction and raffle. We initially hoped to have close to 70 people at the run. We initally hoped to raise somewhere close to $5,000.
Well....We far surpassed both those goals and ended up donating close to $15,000 to the NODCC!
Barbara Fonseca from the NODCC came to the event with her mother Cathleen and her amazing son Nathan. They graciously helped out during the day and accepted the check on behalf of the organization. Nathan cheered everyone on at the finish line and gave me a high five as Colleen, Ian, Brooke, and I finished the race.
This synopsis is long overdue! But, since the run both Brooke and Ian have had a tough go of things. At the present, both are doing Very Well!! However, the Monday after the run Brooke was admitted to UCSF to treat her worsening seizures. Ian was admitted a few months later because of a case of pneumonia. We have had our hands full. Subsequently, these two continue to amaze us. Ian is saying more words and starting to sit on his own! Brooke is starting to reach out, vocalize appropriately, and push upright on her legs! We feel so blessed.
Thank you to all of you that came out to help us! Thank you to all of you that helped behind the scenes. Thank you to all of our amazing sponsors! Colleen & James, Ryan & I were all moved to tears by the outpouring of support. We feel very lucky to have you all in our lives - especially in Brooke's life and Ian's life. We are planning next years event already. We will send out a save the date as soon as possible. We hope that all of you will feel compelled to attend again next year. Again...Thank YOU!
